    Description

I purchased this extremely rare and beautiful carpet in 1980 at a small shop in Laguna Beach, CA that was owned by a Tibetan family. The story that came with it (undocumented), was that it was woven in China for an American Naval Captain stationed there in the 1920’s. That’s all the history I can provide. It is in near perfect condition. The carpet has all 108 figures required to be in a Thangka of this design. The colors are vibrant, with no fading or discoloration. Basically, it’s, a beautifully woven painting. The more you look at it, the more details you see. There are no areas that are worn, threadbare or stained. There are some threads on the rear that were “torn” by a cat of mine who used to sleep on top of it in the closet I stored it in (see photos), but they don’t affect the upper side at all. I have kept it rolled up and stored in a cool dark closet and have rarely displayed it, because I didn’t want to risk it being damaged or walked on. It is a very rare, unique and large carpet, measuring 9’ 3” wide by 11’ 6” long. This might be the only one in existence. The more you look at it and the detailed work, the more amazed you become that it’s a carpet. I have heard there are a few much smaller ones, but nothing of this size and quality. This would be the perfect addition to a yoga or meditation room or ashram.
All proceeds from the sale of this beautiful carpet will be donated to Tibetan Relief Agencies assisting those families who were displaced by the illegal occupation of Tibet by China in 1959.
