A Namgyal monk, the Venerable Lobsang Samten created a sacred sand mandala on the campus of Trinity College, devoted to Avalokitesvara,  a Tibetan Buddhist Bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. After completion, the sacred sand mandala was destroyed and the sand poured into the Connecticut River, so the blessings might be dispersed throughout the universe.
(I believe that this was the second time that a sacred sand mandala had ever been created in the State of Connecticut. Subsequently other mandalas have been created at the William Benton Museum of Art at UConn, Trinity College, Wesleyan University, and a spiritual center in West Hartford, over the last 26 years).
