stamps in Washington, DC - the day before President Ronald Reagan declared October 16 as "World Food Day"
.
The stamp was designed by Jerry Pinkney of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and depicts the faces of three individuals who symbolize the plight of millions of people worldwide
.
At the time of the stamps issuance, the United Nations estimated that malnutrition affected more than 500 million people worldwide. In Africa alone, more than 150 million children and adults were at risk of starving to death.
In an effort to end this worldwide problem, organizations such as the Peace Corps and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) initiated comprehensive programs to reduce food and crop losses from disease and pests, increase the industrial production of foods, and establish and expand modern agricultural methods.
