On March 18, 1972, the U.S. Postal Service issued these
    Family Planning
8¢ gummed stamps in New York, NY
. The artwork is by Charles Reid of Green Farms, CT.
This stamp was issued to highlight the issue of responsible family planning, in an attempt to control rapid population growth. A stamp had long been lobbied for in honor of Margaret Sanger, a birth control advocate. Planned Parenthood was one of the chief proponents, which helped to fuel controversy and spark objections from the Catholic Church and other opponents. After five years of debate, this Family Planning stamp was issued, minus any reference to
Mrs. Sanger, the principal spokesperson for the
    birth control
movement from 1912 until her death in 1966.
Her most‐famous quote was: “No woman can call herself free... until she can choose whether or not to be a mother”.
